ESXi-Customizer

 ESXi-Customizer is a user-friendly script that automates the process of customizing the ESXi install-ISO with drivers that are not originally included. Unlike other scripts and manuals that are available for this purpose ESXi-Customizer runs entirely on Windows and does not require any knowledge of or access to Linux.

Siempre que vamos a realizar un despliegue del hipervisor VMware ESXi tenemos que tener en cuenta que disponemos de los drivers necesarios a la hora de instalarlo, para ello deberemos generar una imagen personalizada a la que le agregaremos dichos plugins/drivers con objeto de realizar una correcta instalación.
Como alternativa a Image Builder, para hacer un proceso más sencillo, los chicos de ‘VMware Front Experience’ han creado este script, ESXi Customizer, es un sencillo script que mediante GUI personalizaremos nuestras imágenes de ESXi rápidamente, la versión actual (2.7) permite customizar tanto:
- ESXi 4.1 (desde Windows 7 x86/x64 o Windows 2008 R2), necesitaremos el archivo OEM.tgz con el driver necesario.
- ESXi 5.0 (desde Windows XP x86/x64 o Windows 7 x86/x64 o Windows 2008 R2) podremos usar el fichero OEM.tgz con el driver correspondiente, cómo un fichero VIB (VMware Installation Bundle) o un ZIP (VMware Offline Bundle).

Ejecutamos ‘ESXi-Customizer.cmd’, necesitaremos agregar lo primero la imagen ISO original de VMware ESXi, posteriormente el fichero que nos hayamos descargado o generado con el driver (OEM.tgz, VIB o ZIP), crearemos si queremos la ISO para UEFI BIOS y además podremos comprobar si hay actualizaciones del script & “Run!”

En este caso le metí un driver de una HBA Brocade… nos preguntará si lo agregamos & “Sí”,

Y pasados unos segundos ya nos habrá generado el fichero ‘ESXi-5.0-Custom.iso’ mezclándonos la imagen original de ESXi (usé un ESXi 5.0 con Update 1) y un driver descargado de la web de brocade para que reconozca nuestra HBA.
Otra de las utilidades interesantes que encontraremos en este sitio web, será ESXi 5 Community Packaging Tools (o ESXi5-CPT) que son dos scripts para generar los paquetes de software necesario en formato VIB o ZIP, el primero tgz2vib5.cmd y el último vib2zip.cmd!

Windows 8.1 llega a fines de junio

Es una versión actualizada de su sistema operativo Windows 8. Será presentado en la conferencia Build. Conocé qué trae y mirá el video para saber de qué se trata.


Microsoft anunció hoy el lanzamiento de una versión actualizada de su sistema operativo Windows 8, en el mercado desde hace seis meses, y del cual dijo haber vendido más de 100 millones de licencias de marca.
  
"Windows 8.1 es el nombre de una actualización que estará disponible, basada en el audaz planteo hecho con Windows 8 para ofrecer en la próxima generación de tabletas y PCs", dijo el responsable de marketing de Microsoft, Tami Reller, en un blog.
Se trata de una actualización gratuita para todos los usuarios de Windows 8 y se podrá descargar de Windows Store.  Será presentado en la conferencia Build Windows, en San Francisco, entre el 25 y 28 de junio próximo.
"Ofrecerá las últimas innovaciones a través de una cada vez más amplia gama de factores de forma de todos los tamaños, pantallas, duración de la batería y rendimiento, creando nuevas oportunidades para nuestro ecosistema".

Añadió que Windows 8.1 -que en un principio se llamó Windows Blue-  "es parte de un esfuerzo más amplio para avanzar en nuestros dispositivos y servicios de Microsoft".

Reller señaló que la empresa ha "superado recientemente los 100 millones de licencias de marca vendidas para Windows 8", entre ellas para los nuevos dispositivos y actualizaciones. Eso supone un alza desde los 60 millones en la última actualización de la compañía en enero.

Al comentar sobre la tibia respuesta del público al Windows 8, Reller dijo que el nuevo sistema operativo "es un cambio ambicioso grande".

"Si bien somos conscientes de que el cambio lleva tiempo, nos sentimos bien con el progreso desde su lanzamiento, incluyendo lo que hemos sido capaces de lograr con respecto a la reacción de los ecosistemas y a los clientes a los nuevos PCs y tabletas que están disponibles ahora o pronto llegarán al mercado", añadió.

Uno de los retos de Microsoft es lanzar una actualización para los dispositivos de todos los tamaños.

Microsoft había admitido que debía cambiar Windows 8.  “Estamos siendo muy realistas sobre lo que debemos cambiar y hacerlo tan rápidamente como sea posible”, había señalado anteriormente Tami Reller.

Todo indica que la actualización que llega a fin de año repondrá una función que Microsoft excluyó en el Windows 8 y que no le fue bien: el popular menú de inicio. Así, la idea es recuperar una interfaz más familiar para el usuario

Interactive logon: Message text for users attempting to log on

Description

This security setting specifies a text message that is displayed to users when they log on.
This text is often used for legal reasons, for example, to warn users about the ramifications of misusing company information or to warn them that their actions may be audited.
Default: No message.

Configuring this security setting

You can configure this security setting by opening the appropriate policy and expanding the console tree to: Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\.
For specific instructions about how to configure security policy settings, see Edit security settings on a Group Policy object.
Caution
  • Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 add support for configuring logon text that can exceed 512 characters in length and that can also contain carriage return/line feed (CR/LF) sequences. If you do not use CR/LF sequences in your logon text, the maximum number of characters that you can add is 512. If you use CR/LF sequences, you can use a maximum of four lines of 512 characters each for a total of 2,048 characters. However, Windows 2000–based client computers cannot interpret and display logon text that is created by computers running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. You must use a Windows 2000–based computer to create a logon text policy that applies to Windows 2000–based computers. If you inadvertently create a logon text policy by using a computer running Windows XP Professional or Windows Server 2003, and you discover that it does not display properly on Windows 2000–based computers, do the following:

    • Undefine the setting.
    • Redefine the setting by using a Windows 2000–based computer.

      You cannot simply change a Windows XP Professional or a Windows Server 2003–defined logon message policy by using a Windows 2000–based computer. The setting must be undefined first.

Manage wireless network profiles in Windows 8

 
 
 
 
If you need to change or delete a wireless connection profile, you can usually do it by right-clicking the network in the network list and choosing a command on the menu that appears. But there are some tasks that need to be done at the command prompt. Here's a table showing how to do the most common tasks.

Show all wireless profiles on the PC
At the command prompt, type:
netsh wlan show profiles
 
Show security key for a profile within range
Press and hold or right-click the network in network list, and then tap or click View connection properties.
 
Show security key for a profile that's out of range
At the command prompt, type:
netsh wlan show profile name=“ProfileName” key=clear
Delete a profile within range
Press and hold or right-click the network in the network list, and then tap or click Forget this network.
 
Delete a profile that's out of range
 
At the command prompt, type:
netsh wlan delete profile name="ProfileName"
 
Move a network up in the priority list
Connecting to a new network and setting it to autoconnect will place it at the top of the list.
 
Stop automatically connecting to a network within range
Tap or click the network in the network list, and then click Disconnect.
 
Stop automatically connecting to a network that's out of range
 
At the command prompt, type:
netsh wlan set profileparameter name=”ProfileName” connectionmode=manual

How Windows determines connection priority

Windows usually connects to networks in this order:
1. Ethernet
2. Wi‑Fi
3. Mobile broadband
When you connect to a new Wi‑Fi network, it’s added to the list, and Windows will connect to that network while it’s in range. If you connect to another Wi‑Fi network while in range of the first network, Windows will prefer the second network over the first one.
Mobile broadband networks are treated differently. If you manually connect to a mobile broadband network when there is a Wi‑Fi network in range, the mobile broadband network is preferred just for that session. The next time you’re in range of both networks, the Wi‑Fi network is preferred. This is because mobile broadband networks typically are metered.
If you want to force your PC to prefer a mobile broadband network over Wi‑Fi, tap or click the Wi‑Fi network in the list of networks, and then click Disconnect. Windows won’t automatically connect to that Wi‑Fi network.

WirelessNetView


Description

WirelessNetView is a small utility that runs in the background, and monitor the activity of wireless networks around you. For each detected network, it displays the following information: SSID, Last Signal Quality, Average Signal Quality, Detection Counter, Authentication Algorithm, Cipher Algorithm, MAC Address, RSSI, Channel Frequency, Channel Number, and more.

DD-WRT Configure Client mode

 Introduction

This mode is NOT for WIRED connections between two routers! It is a wireless connection between two routers only.
A router in Client Mode connects to another wireless Access Point (the host router). It uses its wireless connection as the WAN interface, and shares the internet connection only to the LAN ports. It is not seen as an access point by laptops or other computers scanning for AP's and does not accept wireless connections from client devices. The AP is not required to be running DD-WRT firmware.
The main router and secondary router (DD-WRT client mode) are on separate subnets. NAT is used between the routers. Thus, when port forwarding is needed it must be configured at both routers — not just on the main (host) router.
The router in Client Mode must use its own DHCP server to give out IP numbers, Gateway and DNS server to the devices connected to its LAN ports.
To have computers connected to both routers (main and secondary) and co-exist in the same subnet, set up DD-WRT as a Client Bridge, Repeater Bridge or use WDS. Further explanation of bridging modes is in the Glossary.

 Client Mode Setup

The Router/AP that you are trying to connect to is the primary router. The Router you are configuring is the client router. You don't need to worry about the primary router as long as you set your client LAN IP address to a different subnet. What this means is, if the primary router has an IP of 192.168.A.x, you need to set the client router to an IP of 192.168.B.x. Most primary routers will be at 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.0.1. So, when you are configuring your client router, set it to 192.168.2.x.
With that in mind, here is how to configure it:
  1. Download the current recommended build for your router. Check the forum for your chipset to find recommended builds and general information related to your hardware. If you are using a Broadcom based router, read the peacock thread prior to starting. DO NOT USE SP1!
  2. Do a HARD reset on your router.
  3. Connect a cable from your computer to the LAN port on your router.
  4. Set your computer to a static IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.7)
  5. Open a web browser and connect to 192.168.1.1 to view the DD-WRT GUI.
  6. You should be asked to change your password and username. Carefully type these in. If you aren't asked for a password and username, do a hard reset, this time doing it properly! Hit change password.
  7. FIRST go to Wireless -> Wireless Security and enter the Security Mode and other key information that matches your primary router that you will be connecting to over wireless.
  8. Hit SAVE (not apply)
  9. NEXT go to the Wireless -> Basic Settings and change the Wireless Mode to Client.
  10. On that same tab set the Wireless Network Name (SSID) to exactly the same SSID as your primary router you will be connecting to over wireless. Make sure spelling and capitalization match. Note: If there are multiple routers broadcasting the same SSID, and you would like to connect to a specific one (IE, the primary router, instead of the repeater), enable MAC Filtering on the Wireless Tab, and add the MAC Address of the correct Access Point. The MAC Address can be found on the "Site Survey" page, linked from the "Wireless" Sub-tab of the "Status" Tab. - Conjur
  11. (Optional) Set the correct ack timing in meters. (Where?)
  12. Hit SAVE (not apply)
  13. NEXT go to Setup -> Basic Setup and change Connection Type to Automatic Configuration - DHCP (most likely, but see NOTE below).
  14. On that same tab in the Network Setup section set the Local IP Address to 192.168.2.1 (Your Client subnet MUST differ from the Primary Router subnet!).
  15. (Optional) Set Static DNS servers in the Network Address Server Settings section if your WAN type does not provide them or you want to use different ones than the AP provides.
  16. (Recommended) Change your Time Zone and DST to match where you are.
  17. (Optional) Set a Server IP/Name for in Time Setting section for NTP (it will use a hidden default server if you leave it blank).
  18. Hit SAVE (not apply)
  19. (Optional) Go to Security -> Firewall and disable the SPI Firewall if you do not need to worry about security between the AP and Client router.
  20. Hit Apply.
  21. Set your computer back to auto IP and auto DNS if you like. You will get a DHCP address from the router.
You are done and the Client router should connect to the AP within a minute or so. You may need to unplug the router for 17 seconds if the router doesn't reset. After you ensure that it does connect and work properly then you may configure any other settings you wish to (Virtual Interface for wireless connection for example).
NOTE: If the client router is externally managed, such as in a college dorm etc., you should Go to Setup -> Basic Setup and set the WAN port protocol to what you need for the AP (mostly static, dhcp or pppoe). This is the setting that is bonded to the Wifi interface. Fill in the needed info provided by your ISP if this AP is externally managed. Note: This is what a computer (wired or wireless) connected to the ROUTER would use to gain access to the network, not to be confused with the settings required to gain access to the WAN by the ROUTER. Also note that the device should be in GATEWAY MODE instead of ROUTER mode, otherwise Masquerade/NAT does not happen.

DD-WRT Hard Reset

 

Hard reset or 30/30/30

Wait a couple of minutes after upgrade is complete and the router has rebooted itself.

[edit] Hard Reset (aka 30/30/30 reset):

The following procedure will clear out the NVRAM and set dd-wrt back to default values:
  • With the unit powered on, press and hold the reset button on back of unit for 30 seconds
  • Without releasing the reset button, unplug the unit and hold reset for another 30 seconds
  • Plug the unit back in STILL holding the reset button a final 30 seconds (please note that this step can put Asus devices into recovery mode...see note below!)
This procedure should be done BEFORE and AFTER every firmware upgrade/downgrade.
Do not use configuration restore if you change firmware builds (different svn build numbers).
[NOTE] - For Asus units, the standard 30/30/30 method will reset the router but you will need to use the Restore button followed by a Power cycle. The only exception (so far) is the RT-N16 model, follow the same method as stated above but use the WPS button instead of the Restore button. If all else fails to reset you can also do it by command line (all units). Login to the router via telnet/ssh and issue the command "erase nvram". This will reset the nvram partition to defaults for this Make of router.....redhawk

[edit] Erasing NVRAM:

As an alternative method, it is possible to restore DD-WRT to default settings without using the reset button (useful if you're locked out of the web interface or the reset button is disabled, broken, etc. or if your router just refuses to reset using 30/30/30).
[CAUTION] - On some devices, resetting NVRAM in this fashion may cause more problems than it solves. For example, Asus WL-500g and the Motorola WR850G bootloader will not recreate default values and will not boot properly after being reset. If you do this on a Siemens SE505 V1, your router will not be accessible to you anymore! You will have to reflash it with the stock firmware on IP address 192.168.1.1 (NOT 192.168.2.1 as the installation procedure says!!)
The following requires that DD-WRT already be installed on your router, and Telnet (or SSH) services be enabled and accessible.
Telnet (or SSH) into 192.168.1.1
Issue commands:
erase nvram
reboot
or
mtd -r erase nvram
The mtd method should be used with caution! The erase nvram;reboot method is much safer!
All should be in default settings now.

After resetting DD-WRT, you need to login with the user name "root" and password "admin".
